Current Issues and Research in Pre-school Care and Education

This course introduces students to critical research issues in early childhood. Emphasis will be given to evaluating the conceptual and methodological assupmtions underlying the research in this area. Attention is also given to the identification and framing of specific research questions and hypotheses.

This subject will introduce the Developmentally Appropriate Environment to students. It covers the factors that influence the learning environment. Students will be made aware of the challenges involved in preparing a conducive environment for young children.
      From the day children are born, they become language learners. This subject will develop the teachers’ understanding of the processes involved across the language modes of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Children’s literature will provide a major focus for the development of classroom strategies.

Science and Technology in Young Children

Further development of understanding and skills to teach mathematics at the pre-school and k-2 levels of schooling are explored. Current research findings will be considered in the development of good classroom practices.
     
This subject deals with the methodology of teaching science. This subject is planned to enable students to investigate science and technology and how it relates to early childhood settings and to gain practice in planning and implementing a series of lessons/activities. Environmental science and technology are fundamental in everyday life and experiences.

Creative Arts

Music and Movement

Creative arts are our universal language. Students will be exposed to a wide range of forms and art that will foster creative and aesthetic expressions. They will be taught how to design and conduct creative hands-on art activities for young children. Assessment of children’s works will be discussed.

     

This subject assists students to understand the importance of music and movement as well as the development of children’s creativity. Children will learn to use music as a means for communication as well as for relaxation. Moreover, the multicultural musical experiences help familiarise children with the important aspects of different cultures.

Personal and Social Awareness

Motor Skills Development

In this unit, students will learn to plan for activities to promote the personal and social development of young children. Students need to be aware of how to help each child develop a sense of awareness and self esteem. Children must be allowed to express and accept his/her feelings - both good and bad - and to develop pride as an individual and a member of a cultural or ethnic group.
     

This unit covers Physical Motor Development and corresponding Motor Skills Development in young
children. Students will be exposed to a range of
enjoyable and developmentally appropriate
exercises and activities. The goal in teaching fundamental movement skills is that children learn to enjoy the experiences as well as improve their motor skills.

 
 
Unit 14:
Planning and Designing Early Childhood Curriculum

The subject reviews current understanding of early childhood curriculum and examines theory and practice in a range of settings. Curriculum
processes, evaluation and practices are critically examined. Students will learn how to plan,
evaluate and assist children’s learning. The subject also reviews the factors that influence early childhood curriculum, such as the
availability of family and community resources, and
the goals and expectations of primary education and
multiculturalism.
